Esther Maltby
Esther Maltby is a former fabric shop owner who now lives in Iluka, where the surrounding landscape has rekindled her creative spirit and her passion for eco dyeing.
Her love of textiles began early. At eight years old she learnt to sew on her mother’s treadle sewing machine, beginning a lifelong connection with fabric, design and making.
My Story
Over the years Esther developed her skills through a range of studies in fashion and design, including tailoring, stretchwear, pattern making, creative sewing and home decor. She has completed certificates in upholstery and industrial machine operation, along with a diploma in interior design.
Eco dyeing has become a natural extension of this lifelong journey with textiles. Inspired by the plants and colours found in nature, Esther uses leaves and flowers to imprint organic patterns and subtle colours directly onto fabric.
She particularly enjoys working with wool and silk, creating garments and homewares that combine natural fibres, thoughtful design and the quiet beauty of botanical forms.
Find Esther's one-off pieces of eco-dye in the middle room in the Iluka Emporium.
