Celebrating Mangroves
Lucille Atkins: As a child I have strong memories of being left to play on the Iluka mudflats while my mother went fishing. I certainly didn’t like the mud, the smell, the midges and the mosquitoes. Thank goodness that dislike of the gloomy mangroves has changed into awe of this rich and diverse ecosystem; a system that is known as the lungs of the earth and natural defender of coastal areas all around the world. My latest jewellery collection has been inspired by the beauty and resilience of the flowers, seeds and pods of the Clarence River mangrove trees.
Victoria Handley: A keen kayaker for many years, I have explored our coastal zones from the shorelines and waterways. I have experienced the sublime beauty at high tide, gliding silently beneath the ancient forest canopy of mangroves in pristine waters of the Sandon River. I have paddled and walked along the dank muddy banks of the Brunswick river and its tributaries. This series of work reflects my appreciation and insight into the often-misunderstood hero of our shores.
Please join us for the opening on Saturday 3rd October, 11am–12pm at Iluka Emporium.
No RSVP required.
